RENOWNED black empowerment activist Sonny Kuzomunhu Chasi, who is languishing in remand prison for alleged murder and rape charges, is being sued by his landlord for failing to pay more than $1 000 rent.
Chasi (72), of Number 37 Sturton Drive, Glenvale in Richmond was rearrested last year in November after being released from a seven-year jail term for fraud and found his wife Dorcas Majola (41) pregnant. He allegedly assaulted her resulting in her death.
He has allegedly not paid rent since November as he is in remand prison resulting in his landlord, Dr R Hill approaching the Civil Court in Bulawayo seeking an order for his eviction and execution of property.
According to summons by Dr Hill, Chasi was supposed to pay $250 per month for the house.
The two entered into an agreement in respect of the property at Number 37 Sturton Drive on 31 August 2004 and the agreed rent was Z$400 000, which was however, changed by virtue of an addendum to the lease to the $250.
Dr Hill said Chasi was supposed to pay the rent on the first day of every month and as at 17 April this year, the money had accumulated to $1 056.01 which he said his incarcerated tenant had neglected or failed to pay.
"You are hereby summoned that you do within seven days after service of these summons upon you, enter or cause to be entered with the legal practitioners at the specified time on behalf of the plaintiff," read part of the summons.
Dr Hill's lawyers are Danziger and Partners.
There was no response by Chasi to the summons, which were served on him in May this year because he is remanded in custody.
Dr Hill has filed for a default judgement seeking cancellation of the lease agreement and his eviction from the said house.
He also seeks the court to evict anyone who could be claiming occupation of the property and attachment and execution of property to recover the money.
Chasi is also expected to the money at an interest of 5 percent per annum.
The application for a default judgement is yet to be heard in court.
The trial of Chasi for murder and six counts of raping his 12-year-old daughter in 2008 would start from 24 to 27 September at the Bulawayo High Court.
