A-63-YEAR-OLD woman from Chiredzi in Masvingo slipped and drowned in a well while fetching water, police confirmed yesterday.

Masvingo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Peter Zhanero said the incident happened on Saturday at about 7am.He identified the woman as Ellen Chibharo of Triangle.

He said her body was taken to Chiredzi Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem. Insp Zhanero said Chibharo went to fetch water from a well, a few kilometres from her homestead in the company of a neighbour.

"Chibharo went to fetch water in the company of Ms Saruna Chisvetu. On arriving at the well, the pair started fetching water but Chibharo slipped and fell into the well," he said.

After Chibharo fell into the well, Ms Chisvetu raised alarm and other villagers rushed to the scene.

"Villagers went to the scene to rescue Chibharo but unfortunately she had already drowned. They managed to retrieve her body," said Insp Zhanero.

"A report was made to the police who attended the scene and took the body to the mortuary."
He said no foul play was suspected.
