FORMER Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai's wife, Elizabeth, has nothing to do with a Facebook account created in her name, warning that the characters behind the account were fraudulent, his spokesperson has said.

Tsvangirai's spokesperson Luke Tamborinyoka yesterday warned Zimbabweans against falling prey to the page that is now soliciting for money allegedly to pay legal fees.

"A fraudulent Facebook page in the name of Amai Tsvangirai has started soliciting for financial assistance, in what could be a scam to defraud people in the name of the MDC-T president's wife, who has nothing to do with that page," he said.

"Elizabeth Tsvangirai has nothing to do with the Facebook page called Elizabeth Macheka Tsvangirai-First Lady, a fraudulent page, whose popularity is growing phenomenally every day."

Tamborinyoka said Elizabeth believed the page had been started by people out to tarnish and soil her name and image.

"Today (yesterday), the fraudulent page posted a letter supposedly from a family seeking financial assistance to pay legal fees.

"This could be a scam by fraudsters seeking to make money using the name of Amai Tsvangirai."

"Amai Tsvangirai is very clear that there is a sinister motive on the part of the people behind this page, which now started sourcing for money in her name."

"We urge Zimbabweans to be wary of anyone who purports to be transacting business or sourcing money in the name of Amai Tsvangirai, who has nothing to do whatsoever with the Facebook page that has greatly soiled her name and image in Zimbabwe and beyond."

The Facebook page, established after the Sunday Mail published stories alleging Elizabeth was involved in an illicit affair, has more than 12 000 followers.

In the spoof account, the character posted a letter from an alleged relative of one Wellington Makumbinde, an MDC-T activist from Gutu South incarcerated at Beitbridge prison.

According to the letter, Makumbinde is accused of writing malicious things about President Robert Mugabe and Zanu PF while he was working in South Africa.

The letter says the activist will appear in court next Tuesday and is appealing for legal fees.
