The China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC), which was contracted to upgrade Harare's water delivery system, says the project begins this week with engineers working out a detailed implementation schedule.
Five chief engineers from CMEC arrived in the country this Sunday with a big job awaiting them.
This follows the awarding of a US$144 million loan to the Harare City Council by the China Import and Export Bank in 2011.
The engineering company's chief representative, Mr Zhang Xin told the ZBC that the engineers will be working out modalities to commence the upgrading programme this week.
"According to the arrangements between the Harare Water Department and CMEC, we will make a very detailed implementation schedule, which is why you see a team of contractors in the country," he said,
Another team of 40 engineers and technicians is expected in the country next month.
The project, which will take three years to complete, is expected to address water supply challenges that Harare has been facing due to ageing infrastructure and water leakages.
