A report just released by a local think tank, the Zimbabwe Democracy Institute (ZDI) has castigated the MDC formations for sleeping on duty resulting in a heavy loss for the opposition parties in the July 31 harmonised elections.

The pro-West think tank says the opposition parties were not prepared for the elections.

The report titled 'How can the 2013 Harmonised Elections Results be Explained?' says the outcome giving Zanu-PF an outright majority in parliament and local authorities can be explained by a number of factors.

It says the MDC formations would have gained 18 more seats of the contested seats had they participated in the harmonised elections as a united front.

According to the report, other factors that led to the MDC-T's defeat include poor performance of some of their ministers in the inclusive government and corruption by some of their councillors.

The latest revelations by an organisation that supports the opposition parties is a slap on the face for the MDC-T, which has been claiming it lost the elections due to vote rigging.
