President Robert Mugabe has returned home from the United States where he attended the 68th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

President Mugabe was met at the Harare International Airport by Vice President Joice Mujuru, Senior Minister of State, who is also the Zanu-PF National Chairman, Simon Khaya Moyo, the Minister of state for Presidential Affairs, Didymus Mutasa, service chiefs and other senior government officials.

The United Nations General Assembly debate focused on the Millennium Development Goals that include poverty eradication, eradication of infant mortality and provision of maternal health services, clean drinking water and sanitation among other issues.

It was held under the theme: "Post 2015 Development Agenda : Setting the Stage."

In his address at the General Assembly, President Mugabe condemned the use of unilateral economic sanctions as a foreign policy tool to effect regime change.

He said the sanctions are causing untold suffering to the people of Zimbabwe.

He said Britain, the United States and their allies imposed the sanctions on the country after Zimbabwe embarked on the land redistribution exercise to correct the colonial imbalances.

Mugabe again stressed the need for the urgent reform of the United Nations Security Council to make it more democratic and representative of today's world where some new powers like India and Brazil have appeared on the world map, in contrast to 1945 when the world body was formed.
