A teacher enlisted as a polling officer in Hurungwe during the July 31 harmonised elections has been charged with political campaigning at a polling station after he allegedly uttered the MDC-T "chinja maitiro" slogan to a voter.
Calistos Shumba (27) recently appeared before Karoi resident magistrate Mr Robson Finsin, charged with violating Section 147 (1) (b) (i) (Chapter 2:13) of the Electoral Act, which deals with illegal practices in the vicinity of a polling station.
Shumba, however, denies the charge.
It is alleged Shumba was responsible for ushering voters into Chipango Polling Station. He allegedly scrutinised the identity document of a particular voter (name withheld) after which he allegedly uttered the slogan.
The voter, it is alleged, did not respond and only alerted authorities of the incident soon after casting his ballot. Investigations then led to Shumba's arrest.
He was remanded to October 7 and ordered stay at the given address and also not to interfere with witnesses.
