Former MPs mull strike

MPS who made up the unity government parliament are individually owed amounts ranging between $5 000 to $20 000 in sitting allowances, which they did not receive in the first two years of their tenure because government was financially hamstrung.
The MPs were entitled to $75 daily allowances per plenary sitting, or when they attended committee meetings.
The institution still owes several hotels $750 000 for accommodation during the seventh parliament. These include Meikles, Crowne Plaza, Cresta Jameson, New Ambassador and Holiday Inn.
Despite this, government has acquired two luxurious Mercedes Benz E300 and two Land Rover Discoveries for the Speaker of parliament Jacob Mudenda and President of the Senate Edna Madzongwe while their deputies Mabel Chinomona and Chen Chimutengwende respectively received Toyota Land Cruisers each at a combined estimated cost of about $700 000.
Clerk of parliament Austin Zvoma said they were waiting for treasury to release funds so that parliament pays its debts.
Former vice chairman of the Parliamentarians Welfare Committee Ward Nezi (former Murehwa West MP) said the MPs were planning to demonstrate at Parliament building to force government to pay the outstanding allowances.
