Police have warned public transport operators against employing drivers who are under the age of 25.
This comes after revelations that the driver of a commuter bus involved in an accident that killed two people near the National Sports Stadium in Harare was only 21.
Police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi said that the driver of the commuter omnibus which was involved in an accident that claimed two lives was only 21 years.
The driver was one of the two people who died in the accident that occurred on Thursday along Samora Machel Avenue near the National Sports Stadium.
Chief Superintendent Nyathi said while police will deal with the drivers involved, they will also take action on public transport operators who defy the law and employ people under the age of 25.
"We are still investigating the accident that occurred on Thursday and we want to warn commuter operators and drivers against breaching the law. The law is clear and must be respected at all costs to reduce road accidents," he said.
According to the Zimbabwean laws, public transport drivers are supposed to be 25 years and above.
Statutory instrument number 168 of 2006 stipulates that public service drivers must have five years experience, have a re-test after every five years, a medical endorsement and a defensive driving certificate among others.
Human error has been pin- pointed as the main cause of most road accidents.
Concerns have also been raised over the conduct of traffic police officers who corruptly take bribes and let culprits go free.
