An ex-detective from the CID Vehicle Theft Squad has appeared before a Harare Regional magistrate, Mr Hosea Mujaya to answer allegations of unlawful entry and theft of a motor vehicle.
While giving evidence one of the arresting details, Detective Sergeant Brian Mageta of CID Homicide indicated that on 29 June 2013, they arrested ex-detective Gilbert Zvaita for unlawful entry and theft of a white Isuzu pick up truck [Registration number ACX 8930] belonging to Tichaona Zishiri at number 10741, Greenside in Mutare.
It is alleged that Zvaita had connived with Golden Magweje and Joseph Makanuka, who both died in a shoot out with police, to steal the white truck before looting several of Zishiri's household belongings in Mutare.
He added that Zvaita had later applied for a duplicate registration book at the Central Vehicle Registry (CVR) for Justice Rita Makarau's vehicle which had been damaged beyond repair in an accident under the pretext that he had been tasked by Justice Makarau.
It is the state's contention that Zvaita was successfully issued with new licence plates after going for clearance at CID Vehicle Theft Squad before fitting the plates on the stolen Isuzu KB truck.
The trio was spotted by police officers from Masvingo and further inquiries at the CVR revealed that the registration plates fixed on the Isuzu belonged to Justice Makarau's vehicle.
Zvaita is denying the charges, arguing that he was sent by Mrs Magweju who is on the run.
In the court papers, Justice Makarau denies sending Zvaita to apply for a duplicate registration book and contends that her car was involved in a serious accident and declared a write off and taken to a garage in Graniteside.
