A Mhondoro HIV+ man who infected his 14-year-old lover with virus and sexually transmitted diseases was yesterday thrown behind bars for 10 years.
The man aged 22 pleaded not guilty to rape charges, but regional magistrate Mr Hosiah Mujaya found him guilty of the offence and sentenced him to 10 years in prison.
In his defence, the man claimed that he had fallen in love with the girl believing that she was over 16 years. He said the two dated for about three months until the girl invited him to their tuck shop since her parents were away.
He said when he got to the tuckshop, the girl served him with rice before luring him into being intimate. Proven facts are that the two were lovers.
On August 2 this year, the girl was left alone at home while her mother travelled to Harare. The man, who was patiently monitoring movements at the homestead, sneaked into the girl's room soon after her mother left.
The girl did not notice him because she was busy doing her chores. He then tripled her to the ground and raped her.
The girl did not tell anyone of the offence until she started developing genital sores two weeks after the incident.
She disclosed the offence to her grandmother and that she was developing sores. The grandmother alerted the girl's mother who took her to a clinic where it was established that she had contracted a sexually transmitted disease.
A police report was made leading to the man's arrest.
