Some 36 boarding students were expelled from Victoria High School this week after they allegedly went on a binge on Saturday, drinking and dating in town the MIrror reported.
When contacted for comment, the headmaster, Mr John Muzamani flatly refused any knowledge of the case. However it has since been established that a security guard has been suspended from work over the matter. He is accused of having taken bribes in order to allow the pupils out of the school premises.
The security guard, Admire Machingauta, refuted the allegations that he received $55 from a group of three female students who were allegedly picked up by a black colt from the school gate. He said some people were just out to tarnish his image.
"I was called by the headmaster and we tried to search for the children who had sneaked out of the school premises. We spent the whole night and I was with the deputy head, the headmaster and caretaker when we discovered that the gate was open. The girls are just lying and trying to tarnish my name. Maybe they were cornered by the headmaster and decided to lie. I am even shocked that they (students) are lying that I demanded a dollar each form them to spend time with their lovers in the classrooms," said the security guard.
Sources said after sneaking out, the students were all over Masvingo city centre, at beauty pageant held at the Sports Club, at Ritz and Liquids Night Club.
It is understood that two students who got drunk exposed the rest after they were arrested by the police and it was discovered that there were many more students around the city. Parents to some of the students who were involved confirmed the incident.
After the incident became a public secret, some students reportedly went on to spill the beans and allege that school guards were in the habit of receiving US$1 from students and then arrange a place for them to make love in the classrooms at night.
"We don't have such cases here and we have never heard of anything like that," claimed Mr Muzamani before hanging the phone call.
However, Machingauta, the guard, said he had already conceded to the school authorities that he was to blame for the ordeal.
"For the sake of progress I accepted blame but I still wonder whether this is the work of evil spirits affecting me," he said.
But our source maintained that the security guard indeed demanded bribe in order to facilitate the release of the seemingly naughty students.
"The girls gave Admire Machingauta, the security guard, US$55 after he demanded bribe from them and they contributed the money before they were whisked away by a black Mitsubishi Colt that was waiting form them at the gate. Two of the girls are from Harare while the third one is from Zvishavane. They only returned the following morning with one of them with some blood stains on her clothes," said the source.
