First Lady Grace Mugabe yesterday disclosed that her daughter Bona had gotten married to her sweetheart Simba Chikore in August, adding that details of the young couple's wedding would be made public soon. Grace refuted claims that Bona was raped, she claims that Bona is still a virgin.
A beaming Mai Mugabe told thousands of congregants gathered for the Today's Woman Conference at the City Sports Centre that she is proud of how Bona has heeded her advice to get married while still a virgin. During her address, the First Lady called her daughter to the podium before sharing her joy with other worshipers.
"You make me proud and I am a proud mother," the First Lady told Bona who was accompanied by her mother-in-law, Reverend Christine Chikore.
"We all know that it is difficult to raise daughters especially if you are coming from the kind of family she is coming from where in some instances parents have a tendency of over spoiling children, whatever they ask for they are given without questioning.
"I take time to talk to her constantly and teach her about life because in the past we used to rely on our aunties but the times are changing and we have to do the job ourselves as mothers."
Mugabe also spoke of her admiration for Rev Chikore.
"There is one person that I want to call but I did not tell her about this arrangement, I will I call Chikore . . . I love you so much.
"Way back, I asked my daughter whether she had a boyfriend since she was growing up the same way I did, a shy person and reserved, and she said there was someone who. I called Mai Eunah Guti to ask about the boyfriend and her response in Shona was 'mukomana iyeye akaita mukuwasha wenyu muchafara (if he becomes your son-in-law, your joy will be fulfilled).
"I spoke to Baba Ezekiel Guti, again he echoed the same sentiments.
"They developed a relationship and I told my daughter I am going to bring you up the traditional way.
"Do not ever let that boy touch your breast or your body you must have the honour to get married when you are still a virgin.
"She has listened to me and I spoke to Mai Chikore's son Simba and I told him that I want my daughter to get married when she is still a virgin and he respects that," she said.
Grace Mugabe disclosed that details of Bona and Simba's wedding will be made public soon but urged society to respect the couple's privacy and desist from spreading unfounded romours.
"There were reports that my daughter was raped . . . nothing of that sort ever happened. She is a virgin," she said.
She brought the house down with laughter when she urged women to be exemplary.
"We need women of quality. What do you learn from spending the whole day watching the Big Brother reality show?" she asked.
