The government says it will prioritise the implementation of modern control techniques and technology to fight corruption and all forms of underhand dealings in revenue collection and administration, especially at border posts.

Commissioning Zimbabwe Revenue Authority's non-intrusive scanner machines in Harare, the Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Patrick Chinamasa said Zimbabwe as a transport hub for transit and cargo along the north south corridor will exploit modern technologies to expedite the clearance of goods and travellers.

He said the scanners will enhance efficiency in customs administration and revenue collections as they minimise leakages and corruption at border posts and against the dumping of cheap imported goods.

Asked what his organisation is doing to reduce corruption and underhand dealings which are said to be rampant at border posts, ZIMRA Commissioner General Geshom Pasi said to date more than 20 officers have been charged of underhand dealings.

He called on the public to desist from bribing officers and urged them to report any such acts of corruption.

The new scanners valued at US$10.5 million were donated by the government of the People's Republic of China.

Each scanner takes about three minutes to complete searching a truck.

The customs modernisation agenda is in line with the world customs organisation theme for 2013, which is: 'Innovation for Customs Progress.'

Minister Chinamasa also presided over the pass out parade of a ZIMRA sniffer dog unit.

The dogs also help enhance detection of harmful substances such drugs.
