A 65-year-old woman from Barbourfields suburb in Bulawayo allegedly committed suicide by throwing herself in front of an oncoming train, police confirmed.

"We received a report of a woman who was knocked down by a train this morning. Investigations to establish what actually happened are ongoing," said Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Mandlenkosi Moyo on Tuesday.

The incident occurred near Mpopoma Diesel Sheds at about 7 am.

The woman was residing at Number 321 Barbourfields Flats.

Her daughter who looked distraught said they could not disclose the identity of their mother as other relatives had not been informed.

"We last talked to our mother on Monday evening before we all went to bed and she showed no signs of being troubled by anything. We left her in bed as we went for morning prayers but she was nowhere to be seen when we returned.

"We started looking for her and we came here when we heard that a woman had been hit by a train and that is when we discovered that it was our mother. For now we cannot say much about her because other relatives have not been informed," said the daughter who preferred to remain anonymous.

The daughter was crying uncontrollably when Chronicle visited the scene yesterday morning.

Witnesses said the train cut the woman's body into pieces.

A National Railways of Zimbabwe worker who spoke on condition of anonymity said the woman threw herself in front of the train when it was about 100 metres away.

"The woman was sitting on a rock near the railway line about 500 metres from the Mpopoma Diesel Sheds. When she saw that the train was approaching she stood up somehow confused and threw herself in front of the train," said the worker.
