A Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority ranger who was relieving himself in the bush was attacked and killed by three elephants at the main camp of Hwange National Park on Monday.
The authority's spokesperson Caroline Washaya-Moyo confirmed that the ranger, Lovemore Maphosa (61) was attacked and killed while on patrol with other two rangers.
She said Maphosa, who was on an extended 10-day patrol that started on Tuesday last week, was attacked by the elephants after he had left the patrol base to relieve himself.
Washaya-Moyo said her organisation was saddened by the untimely death of a dedicated ranger like Maphosa who had committed his life in fighting poaching in the country.
She said Maphosa was due for retirement, but had requested for a further five-year term extension of service due to his passion and commitment to conservation.
