The Vice Chancellor of the Great Zimbabwe University (GZU), Professor Rungano Zvobgo has conferred President Robert Mugabe with an honorary Doctor of Philosophy degree in African Heritage and Philosophy for the sterling contribution he has made in the advancement of hunhu/ubuntu.

In his address to the audience that was attending the university's seventh graduation ceremony and President Mugabe's conferment, Professor Zvobgo said President Mugabe has made invaluable contributions towards Zimbabwe's positive self image after a century of colonial and western domination.

"His Excellence has initiated the liberation of the mind and the reclamation of African values. The President and Chancellor has made invaluable contribution towards the African's positive self-perception in general and the people of Zimbabwe's positive self-image in particular, after a century of colonial and western cultural domination," said Professor Zvobgo.

In his acceptance speech, President Mugabe, who is also Great Zimbabwe University Chancellor, said the award has a very special meaning to him.

"This award has a very special meaning to me and has symbolic meaning to us all as Zimbabweans, and indeed as Africans. Indeed Zimbabwe has a very rich history comprising heroes and heroines, empires and kingdoms, cultures and religions, poets, singers and craftsmen, whose stories lie hidden in legends and monuments.

"But, alas, most of this history is lost, chiefly because it is not recorded in the written word," he said.

Mugabe said his vision for Great Zimbabwe University resonates well with the degree awarded to him in that the university focuses on the study of and research into the Zimbabwean heritage.

"Such research should enrich our body of cultural knowledge which in turn develops our sense of being and that of ourselves and so establish a firm foundation for our future," President Mugabe said.

Meanwhile, President Mugabe has capped 1 343 graduands at the Great Zimbabwe University for both undergraduate and post-graduate degrees in the faculties of arts, education, social sciences, commerce and agriculture.
