Serial armed robber stabs cop

A SUSPECTED car thief and serial armed robber who was on the police wanted list for a spate of criminal offences was daring enough to stab a police officer with a knife once in the back, during a scuffle with police as he tried to evade arrest.
Marko Moyo (26), of Mabika village under Chief Negova in Mberengwa was, however, subsequently arrested after being overpowered by other police officers.
Detective Sergeant Martin Kadzima of Zvishavane CID section suffered minor injuries on his back after being stabbed by Moyo.
Moyo is suspected to have been terrorising Zvishavane residents since August this year, committing a number of crimes ranging from car theft, armed robbery to assault.
He appeared before Zvishavane magistrate Mr Story Rushambwa on Thursday last week, for routine remand, facing one count of motor vehicle theft, five counts of robbery and one count of assault.
Moyo was remanded in custody to 3 December for trial at the regional court in Gweru. His case could not be tried at Zvishavane magistrate's courts because the car theft charges levelled against him are beyond the court's jurisdiction.
Presenting the State's case, Mr Stanley Ncube told the court that on 9 August Moyo met one Washington Mavisa at Drumond turnoff who was driving a Toyota Mark II.
Moyo is said to have asked for a lift from Mavisa but later used violence against the latter and robbed him of his vehicle, clothes and two cellphone handsets.
On 25 August at Highlands turnoff along Masvingo-Zvishavane road the suspect is alleged to have again robbed one Antony Hova of two cellphone handsets and $55.
Ncube told the court that on 16 September Moyo met Rosemary Magaya at an area between Mushayi turnoff and Runde bridge and allegedly robbed her of a Nokia Asha 201 cellphone handset and $30.
On 26 September, the court was told, Moyo again went on to allegedly rob one Janet Mubango of a Samsung E20 cellphone handset, $20 and other particulars near Metro Peech wholesalers in Zvishavane.
On the same day Moyo is alleged to have met one Admire Mashonga at the 6km peg along Masvingo-Zvishavane road, and robbed him of two Nokia cellphone handsets, an N2, Lumia 610, and $56.
The suspect is said to have proceeded, again on the same day, to the 8 km peg along Masvingo-Zvishavane road where he robbed Blessing Nyakuruka of a Nokia 1202 cellphone handset and $56.
Nyakuruka reported the matter to police, who immediately launched a manhunt for Moyo.
Moyo was spotted by police three days later, near the area where he had robbed Nyakuruka.
The court was told that as Detective Sgt Madzima tried to apprehend Moyo, the suspect drew a knife which he used to stab Det Sgt Madzima once on his back during the scuffle.
Moyo was, however, overpowered and arrested after other police details intervened to assist Det Sgt Madzima.
