POLICE are investigating the case in which armed robbers raided Spar Supermarket at Marimba Shopping Centre in Harare and got away with over $30 000 after blowing a safe off the wall early on Sunday.
The incident occurred at around 3am and no arrests have been made.
Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Tadius Chibanda yesterday said a security guard who was at the premises heard noise while patrolling and went to investigate.
"He discovered that the burglar bars of one of the windows on the supermarket had been cut, but did not see anyone," he said.
The guard made further checks and discovered that a safe in one of the offices in the first floor had been blown with explosives.
"There was over $30 000 cash which was stolen in the safe. The wall of the office was also blown off in the process," Insp Chibanda said.
He said a report was made to the police and investigations were still in progress in a case they believe could be an inside job.
"We are still investigating the case and we still have more questions than answers," Insp Chibanda said.
Police have been urging people including business owners not to keep large sums of money in their homes and premises as they could fall prey to criminals.
In April, a Korean man lost $10 000 cash, cellphones and electrical gadgets worth over $25 000 to four armed robbers who raided his Sentosa home in Mabelreign, Harare.
This year, at least 2 000 suspects were reportedly roaming the streets scot free as their appeals could not be dealt with timeously due to shortage of transcribers and poor recording equipment, a development that is compromising the justice delivery system.
