Former Warriors midfielder fails to pay maintenance, yanked to court

Former Warriors midfielder Ramson Zhuwawo was yesterday brought before a Chitungwiza magistrate on allegations of failing to pay maintenance for the upkeep of his two children, with the arrears having accrued to $9 100.
Zhuwawo (29) of Mufakose played for Dynamos, Gunners and Eiffel Flats football clubs locally before he turned out for Amazulu of South Africa which offloaded him recently.
He was ordered by a Harare magistrate on September 25 last year to pay maintenance for his two children to the tune of $800 per month. But he failed to honour the order and paid only $500 from February this year till July, resulting in arrears accruing to $9 100.
His wife Stella Rufaro Mapiye (33) reported him to the police, resulting in him appearing before the courts being represented by Mr Phillip Hamunakwadi of Mugiya and Macharaga Law Chambers.
Zhuwawo denied contravening the Maintenance Act before Chitungwiza magistrate Mr Lazarus Murendo and was granted $100 bail coupled with stringent conditions.
He was asked to submit his travelling documents with the Clerk of Court and to reside at his given address and would come back to court on November 12.
Prosecutor Mr Tendai Mukariri said Zhuwawo was a flight risk since he has been out of the country for a long time.
"Your Worship, the accused person is well connected in the neighbouring South Africa," he said.
"He has been out of the country for five years, an indication that he can default."
This is not the first time that the midfielder has had a brush with the law as he was once issued with a warrant of arrest three years ago.
The incident took place after one of the passengers in his omnibus was injured during an accident.
