Dozens of demonstrators besieged the United States Embassy in Harare yesterday to protest against sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe.

Demonstrators from the Patriotic Forum for Children of Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans chanted songs denouncing the targeted measures and calling on Bruce Wharton, the US Ambassador, to remove punitive measures.

According to the association's Secretary General Knowledge Kadzura, there is no need for western countries to continue punishing Zimbabwe, especially after the country successfully held elections on the 31st of July.

The group's national organising secretary Ms Julie Chiondegwa said they managed to deliver a petition meant for US ambassador Bruce Wharton.

The sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe by the west have cost the country an estimated $40 billion.

While European countries imposed the sanctions on Zimbabwe after the EU resolution, the US crafted the Zimbabwe Democracy and Economic Recovery Act, an infamous legislation that forbids American companies to do business with Zimbabwe.
