A 22-YEAR-OLD Marondera man, Kudzai Zambuko, appeared in court on Monday charged with stealing his grandmother's bank savings estimated at over $4 000.
Zambuko denied the charges of stealing her grandmother, Nesi Nyathi's CABS ATM card which he allegedly used to withdraw the money without her consent.
The court heard that on August 3 this year, Nyathi (68) opened a Gold Class account at CABS Marondera branch and deposited $25.
On August 15, her husband's former employer deposited an amount of $5 000 into the account as pension benefits, pushing her account balance to $5 022.
On August 26, Nyathi made a cash withdrawal of $50, leaving a balance of $4 972.
The complainant went back home and put the slip containing her pin number in a handbag which she hid in her wardrobe.
On September 3, Zambuko allegedly got into his grandmother's bedroom and stole the ATM card and initially withdrew $500.
On September 7, the accused withdrew another $500 and $800 three days later. On September 14, he withdrew an additional $800 in Marondera before travelling to Mutare, where he made another withdrawal of $400 the following day.
He then travelled to Rusape where he made a further withdrawal of $200 before going back to Mutare where he again withdrew $800 at a Zimbank ATM cashpoint.
The following day, Zambuko withdrew $800 at CABS Mutare.
The matter only came to light after the complainant failed to locate her bank details and reported the matter to police, leading to Zambuko's arrest.
Police later discovered just $172 was left in Nyathi's account.
Zambuko was remanded in custody to tomorrow for trial.
Godfrey Makwanya prosecuted.
