A 35-year-old farm driver from Macheke was on Tuesday brought to court charged with culpable homicide after he allegedly knocked down and killed a traffic police officer at a checkpoint on July 4 this year.

Marondera magistrate Tendai Muchini heard that on the fateful day, Shingirai Motsi, a driver at Agrimost Farm in Macheke, knocked down the cop Betserai Ndlovu after a Nissan UD truck he was driving developed brake failure while approaching a police roadblock along the Harare-Mutare Road.

Ndlovu allegedly sustained serious injuries and later died on admission at Borradaile Hospital in Marondera.

Public prosecutor Godfrey Makwanya told the court that when Motsi realised that his vehicle had developed brake failure, he swerved it to the left side of the road, hit a concrete block and went on to hit Ndlovu who was off the road and already fleeing the vehicle. In the process, some potato pockets and cabbages on the truck were thrown out and so were the two passengers Godwin Mudzamiri and Phillip Nzara who were on the trailer. Motsi only managed to stop the vehicle about 129 metres from the scene.

The trial continues on November 4.
