A police constable stationed at Harare Central police station may have landed himself in trouble for stabbing a kombi driver, under the chin, a few inches from the throat.
The kombi driver, Timothy Kavhiya had been picked by the cops at the Fourth Street Bus Terminus and was being led to the station. All hell broke loose at the Joina City building when Constable Makhaza allegedly tried to forcefully get the keys off the ignition, resulting in the key breaking.
"He picked me at the Fourth Street terminus and he told me to drive to the Central Police Station. I complied and suddenly at the Joina City he tried to grab the keys from the ignition and he broke the key and the vehicle locked. We went to the station's vehicle department and took out my okapi knife. he began assaulting me with a baton before stabbing me under the chin. Banga ratobuda nemukati," said a visibly shaken Kaviya.
The kombi driver said Makhaza's superiors came in and he lied that he (the driver) was resisting arrest.
"He said that I was failing to comply but I challenged that because I had agreed to drive from Fourth Street to the station. I was rushed to the first aid medical team and dressed before being referred to Parirenyatwa Hospital," he added.
The cop reportedly tried to 'soften' Kavhiya by catering for the medical bills. he has since approached him with a proposal for an out of court settlement.
"He rushed to pay my medical bills and he is saying he will compensate me. I have reported the matter to the police and it will be going to court. he hopes that I will exonerate him," said the stabbed driver.
Constable Makhaza confirmed the incident and said it was an accident. He claimed that they were pushing each other, resulting in the unfortunate stabbing.
"It happened in a short space of time. We were pushing and shoving, trying to grab the knife and it was unfortunate that he got stabbed. It was not deliberate because it is dangerous and we had to rush him to Parirenyatwa Hospital. It was neither his fault nor my fault," claimed the police officer.
