A notorious armed robber who broke into various supermarkets and shops in Masvingo and stole hundreds of thousands of dollars was this week arrested while he was on a spending spree.
Lovemore Gambiza's luck ran out after detectives swooped on him while he was having a good time at a drinking spot in Bulawayo. He was in the company of his accomplices, who managed to escape.
Gambiza appeared before a Chivi magistrate Tendai Ndokera facing charges of unlawful entry and robbery after he broke into Nyaningwe Supermarket and made off with $17 000.
Although he is facing charges of stealing $17 000, detectives believe he is part of a gang that moved around the country breaking into shops and stealing several hundreds of thousand of dollars.
The gang is believed to have preyed on an Econet shop in Masvingo and stole laptop computers and about $10 000 after breaking a safe.
In Masvingo, the gang hit shops at Mashava, Chivi, Zaka and several other places.
Prosecutor, Nixon Chamisa told the court that on October 9 this year, Gambiza, who was in the company of unidentified accomplices who are still at large, forced their way into Nyaningwe Supermarket after breaking a screen bar door.
He allegedly spotted a huge metal safe box where cash was stuffed and broke it using a grinder before taking $17 000.
His car, a Nissan Sunny was identified at the crime scene during the day and its movement made locals suspicious at the growth point.
Police details managed to track the vehicle. It emerged that the car had been reported in other provinces in connections with robberies.
Police, acting on a tip off, swooped on the gang while they were enjoying some drinks, squandering part of their loot.
Gambiza was arrested at the drinking hole in Bulawayo and brought to Chivi where he appeared in court.
He was remanded to November 20 this year.
