SEVERAL passengers were injured when two commuter omnibuses collided while racing for commuters in Gweru's Mkoba suburb resulting in one of the vehicles hitting a donkey and landing on its side.
The injured passengers were rushed to Gweru Provincial Hospital.
The accident, witnessed by this reporter, occurred on Saturday morning at Mkoba Village Seven Bus Stop along the City-Mkoba route.
Two ambulances were called to the accident scene to ferry the injured to hospital.
The donkey was trapped underneath one of the kombis.
Police from Mkoba One Police Station attended to the accident well after the injured had been ferried to hospital.
A witness, Mr Donald Chifuvachengwe, said the two commuter omnibuses were racing for passengers who were at a nearby bus stop when they collided.
"One of the two kombis was coming from the direction of Chikumbiro Primary School while the other was approaching the intersection from Mkoba Village 16 Shopping Centre when the accident occurred. They collided as the drivers tried to beat each other to the bus stop near the intersection," he said.
Chifuvachengwe said the driver of the kombi which was approaching the intersection from Mkoba 16 failed to giveaway to the one which was coming from the direction of Chikumbiro school.
"When they collided, the kombi that failed to give way landed on a donkey which was grazing by the roadside. The donkey was trapped underneath the kombi and died on the spot," he said.
Police spokesperson for Midlands province Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko yesterday said he was not in office to ascertain the number of people who were injured in the accident.
