JUDGMENT in a theft case involving five police officers from Marondera Central Police Station who allegedly stole $3 000 worth of recovered property kept at the police station has been set for Friday.
The five - Whyson Nona (28), Takesure Mombeyarara (29), Kudakwashe Muchemwa (32), Fungai Muranda (32), and Augustine Mugari (38) - are alleged to have stolen the property which included household goods and vehicle accessories in July 2011. The police officers have, however, denied the theft charge.
Last week, the police officers, who are all on $50 bail each, appeared before Marondera magistrate Tendai Muchini and had their matter postponed to November 15 for judgment.
Prosecutor Zivei Hungwe told the court that on July 14, 2011, Nona, Mombeyarara, Muranda and Mugari recovered some stolen property from two suspects Givemore Musurudzwa and Brighton Makura in Dema.
The court heard that the property had been stolen from Crewstar Hardware in Marondera.
On the same day, the four police officers took the property and the two suspects to Marondera Central Police Station where the property was handed over to one Sergeant Madhume and the goods were recorded as Diary Number 1048/11.
The following day, the property owner Unicah Antonio went to the police station where she was shown the property which was packed in 3x50kg sacks and a satchel, but was barred from physically inspecting the goods.
The property was transferred that same day from the Occurrence Book to the Exhibit Book Number 61/11 by one Constable Nyamayaro.
On July 27, Mombeyarara allegedly made an entry in the Exhibit Book purporting that Givemore Musurudzwa's wife Ruvarashe Dzoro had signed for the property purporting to be the owner.
Mombeyarara allegedly ordered the disposal of the said property contrary to standing police rules which state that such orders are only given by a senior officer.
Sometime in September 2011, Mombeyarara allegedly called Antonio's husband and gave him part of the recovered property which he had not booked down in the police exhibit book.
