MDC-T leader Morgan Tsvangirai on Tuesday toured Ruwa town to assess the damage caused by the demolition of illegal structures carried out by the council under a directive from government to clean up cities and towns.

Tsvangirai, who was accompanied by Ruwa Town Board members, met with families who were affected by the exercise. Reports suggest over 200 tuckshops were destroyed in Runyararo, Zimre Park and Damofalls.

The former prime minister condemned the demolitions, describing the acts as "inhuman, callous and overzealous."

At the same time, the party's Standing Committee met in Harare to strategize on the way forward following the July 31 election loss to Zanu-PF.

The Committee also received an investigative report on some councillors accused of conniving with Zanu-PF in elections to choose city mayors.

MDC-T spokesman Douglas Mwonzora said the meeting was meant to reposition the party at a time when Zanu-PF is struggling to control factionalism pitting Justice Minister Emerson Mnangagwa and Vice President Joice Mujuru, believed to have presidential ambitions.

Ruwa Ward 3 councillor, Lazarus Ndlovu, of the MDC-T formation who was part of the delegation, said his party believes Ruwa was targeted as the first victims of the clean-up exercise because of its overwhelming vote for the MDC in the July 31 elections.
