A drunken police constable in Chitungwiza who identified himself as a district commanding officer and prevented members of the Central Investigations Department from arresting two suspects in a theft case has appeared in court.
Constable Caston Matowa (40) stationed at Zengeza police station claimed that the detectives from Beatrice CID had no right to arrest anyone in his area of jurisdiction without reporting first to the police station.
Upon arrival in the town, detective sergeants Gopito, Sandati and Pfekezani all of CID Beatrice raided five houses and arrested Ishmael Manjera, Brighton Chaerera and Jimmy Chaerei. Allegations are that at around 2am the following day, Matowa was drinking in a night club at Unit D shops when the detectives arrived.
They lured the other two suspects Leonard Munyoro and Kenny Madzibaba to their vehicle which carried the other three arrested suspects. The court head that Matowa, who was in civilian clothes, stormed out of the club and approached the team where he identified himself as the district commanding officer of the area.
Prosecutor Mr Edmond Ndambakuwa alleged that Matowa, who was in a drunken stupor, instructed his drinking partners to assault the detectives, resulting in Munyoro and Madzibaba's escape. Matowa went on to demand the release of the other three suspects in the vehicle even after the detectives had identified themselves.
The detectives ended up handcuffing Matowa who broke the cuffs and became violent, but they eventually managed to apprehend him. He was remanded on US$50 bail to Monday next week for trial.
