A THREE-MONTH-OLD baby and a 27-year-old man were killed after an overloaded commuter bus burst a rear tyre and overturned in Masvingo on Sunday. Half-a-dozen other people were injured and remain hospitalised.
Police have cited speed as a factor in the accident shortly after midday at the 11km peg along the Masvingo-Great Zimbabwe road.
Masvingo police spokesperson, Inspector Peter Zhanero, named the dead as Peter Mudye (27) of Rujeko C and infant Tawananyasha Musengi of Morningside.
He said the vehicle, a Toyota Hiace, driven by Mr Obert Karuru, was travelling towards Great Zimbabwe and it had 17 passengers.
Mr Karuru failed to control the vehicle after its rear right tyre burst, causing it to veer off the road before overturning. Police believe he was speeding and charges are expected to follow.
"We're already in the festive season and as police we are appealing to motorists to travel with maximum caution on the country's roads.
Drivers of public transport are expected to drive within the stipulated speed limit," said Insp Zhanero.
