THE Bulawayo man who jumped from the third floor of a city flat as he fled from an angry mob that had caught him red-handed stealing clothes worth $30 from a washing line yesterday appeared in court.
Bulawayo magistrate Mr Crispen Mberewe, who presided over a circuit court held at the United Bulawayo Hospital (UBH), heard how on the morning of 21 November, Bright Kanengoni of Number 808 James Court, was allegedly caught stealing clothes from a washing line on the third floor of Malvin Court, situated between 9th Avenue and Main Street opposite Bulawayo Centre.
Prosecuting, Mr Kudakwashe Jaravaza told the court that on 21 November, Mr Jethro Paguwa left his two pairs of shoes, a pair of jeans and a blanket on the washing line. Kanengoni, who was passing by, spotted the clothes from a distance.
He then walked up the staircase and while in the process of stealing the clothes, he was caught red-handed by Mr Paguwa and he alerted other tenants.
"The tenants chased him during which he jumped to the second floor balcony and that is when they caught up with him and started beating him up," said Mr Jaravaza.
As the attack intensified, Kanengoni had no choice but to jump again from the second floor to the first floor resulting in him sustaining a fractured leg.
The tenants managed to apprehend him and reported the matter to the police leading to Kanengoni's arrest. The stolen clothes worth $30 were all recovered.
The magistrate remanded Kanengoni in custody to 9 December.
He is still admitted to the UBH where he is recovering under the guard of prison officers.
