A 30-year-old Banket man fatally stabbed his wife upon discovering an unknown number in her mobile phone and later attempted to kill himself.

Mashonaland West Provincial police spokesperson Inspector Clemence Mabweazara confirmed the incident yesterday, saying Lovemore Shoko stabbed himself three times on the ribs in a suicide attempt after discovering he had killed his wife.

"We received a report following the death of Betty Chiminya of House Number 769 Kuwadzana Township (Banket) who was fatally stabbed by Lovemore Shoko after discovering an unknown mobile phone number in her phone. Shoko, who stabbed himself three times on the ribs, is admitted at Banket hospital where he is receiving treatment under police guard," he said.

It is alleged that on the fateful day at around 10am the couple was at their house when Shoko saw an unknown mobile number in his wife's phone. Shoko allegedly concluded that Chiminya was having an extra-marital affair and a misunderstanding ensued.

It is alleged that during the misunderstanding Shoko grabbed a knife and stabbed Chiminya several times all over her body, causing grievous injuries. Inspector Mabweazara said Shoko turned the knife on himself when he saw the deceased's sister Mary rushing to the scene to intervene.

Mary reported the matter at Banket police station, leading to Shoko's arrest while Chiminya was pronounced dead on admission at Banket Hospital. Chiminya's body was taken to Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital Mortuary for a post-mortem. Insp Mabweazara expressed concern with the increasing number of deaths arising from domestic violence.

He urged members of the public to seek professional counselling to resolve domestic disputes.
