Seven Harare City Council Traffic Officers have been arrested on allegations of soliciting for bribes from motorists whose vehicles were impounded.

The City Council Town Clerk, Dr Tendai Mahachi confirmed the development and said the seven traffic officers were arrested following investigations that were instituted by the council.

He said the officers are now helping the police with investigations, adding that more officers are likely to be arrested.

Dr Mahachi said the Harare City Council condemns corruption and as part of its vision of a world class city by 2025, no stone will be left unturned in fighting the cancer.

On what measures will be taken by the council to prevent corruption, Dr Mahachi said only the Harare City Council Traffic Director will now authorise the release of impounded vehicles.

Last month, eight revenue officers from the Harare City Council were arrested for manipulating the billing system.

Corruption at any level in society has been identified as a threat to the country's efforts to turn around the economy.
