A Form Two Queen Elizabeth High School pupil in Harare committed suicide on Wednesday afternoon after she was suspended from school over misconduct allegations.
Gamuchirai Chimoto (15) of Bluff Hill was pronounced dead on admission at the Mabelreign 24hr Pacific Clinic. She is believed to have consumed a 100ml bottle of Agricura pesticide known as Diazinon 30.
Although the details were still sketchy by last night, sources said she was suspended from school over her alleged involvement in lesbian cases at the school. Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Tadius Chibanda confirmed the incident and said he was yet to get the official position on the matter.
"The only position I have so far is that she was yesterday (Wednesday) suspended from school by the authorities over her behaviour. This was after the father was summoned to the school and was present when the decision was made," he said.
He said her father left her after she had boarded a kombi which was heading home. It is reported that as soon as she got home, she collapsed on the veranda and started vomiting.
Her grandmother noticed it and rushed to assist.
Insp Chibanda said she smelt the pesticide from Gamuchirai and tried to give her some milk so that she would vomit but to no avail.
The grandmother also discovered a 100ml empty bottle of the pesticide.
Gamuchirai was taken to the clinic where she was pronounced dead.
Her body was taken to a private funeral parlour.
One of the close relatives yesterday said they were not in a position to comment on the matter as they were still waiting for Gamuchirai's parents to arrive at the Buff Hill home.
Gamuchirai was reportedly living with her grandparents while the father resides in Domboshava.
Her mother lives in Bulawayo.
