A 31-YEAR-OLD Harare man who attempted to kill his wife following a domestic dispute escaped a custodial term after the court ordered him to perform 420 hours of community service.
Trymore Chipwanya was initially slapped with a two-year jail term when he appeared before Harare regional magistrate Themba Kuwanda on Wednesday following his conviction for attempting to kill his wife, Melody Gorosviba (22).
However, Chipwanya will not set foot on prison grounds after the court suspended a year on condition of good behaviour and another on condition that he performs 420 hours of community service at Greystone Park Clinic.
The court heard that prior to the incident, Chipwanya and his wife used to stay at Horpit Farm in Ruwa where they both worked as farm labourers.
On May 4 this year and at around 11:30am, the court heard, Chipwanya had a misunderstanding with his wife over family issues that were not made clear in court papers.
Following a heated argument, Gorosviba left her matrimonial home together with her sister.
Incensed by his wife's move, Chipwanya then followed the two sisters and caught up with them as they walked along Dhabuka Road in Ruwa.
At that juncture, Chipwanya grabbed his wife by the waist, pushed her to the ground and stabbed her several times all over the body with a knife.
He then fled the scene, leaving her seriously injured and lying in a pool of blood.
The matter was reported to police, leading to his arrest.
