An unrepentant Seke man who seriously assaulted his wife with a wooden stick for answering a call which resulted in him accusing her of infidelity has been sentenced to an effective nine months in prison.

Shadreck Gonda (46) of Rubatika Village had developed a habit of treating his wife as a punching bag. Hardly five months ago he was convicted of a similar offence, but defied the court order by assaulting his wife Plaxedes Mucheche (41) with a two-metre long stick on the head.

The incident took place last Saturday at around 6pm at their homestead after Mucheche called her friend Farisai Zawa.

Someone else answered the call and later informed Zawa that Mucheche had called.

Trouble started when Zawa returned the call and Mucheche decided to answer her while walking outside the house.

Gonda followed her accusing her of talking to a boyfriend. He grabbed his wife and dragged her into their house where he took a wooden stick and hit her several times. She fell to the ground bleeding heavily.

She sustained a deep cut on the head.

Mucheche's neighbour Chipo Siyanemburo rushed to the scene and restrained Gondo.

Chitungwiza magistrate Ms Nomsa Sabarauta sentenced Gonda to 12 months in prison. Three months of his sentence were suspended on condition of good behaviour.

Two months suspended on his previous conviction were also brought into effect.

Ms Ntombikayise Nleya prosecuted.
