The Information, Media and Broadcasting Services Ministry says the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation has a total debt of more than $44 million.
The Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mr George Charamba, was testifying before a parliament portfolio committee on media.
Mr Charamba said ZBC, which is saddled with a lot of operational challenges, is being taken through an audit analysis in order to come up with a turn-around strategy.
Asked about the state of affairs by parliamentarians, Malachi Nkomo, Kindness Paradza, William Dhewa, Mr James Maridadi and Mr Anele Ngwenya who sit on the portfolio committee on media, Mr Charamba also said besides offsetting the debts which ZBC owes, the ministry also plans to restructure the broadcaster in a business manner that will make it a commercially viable entity.
The permanent secretary also revealed that the country will not meet the SADC deadline for the digitalisation process of the national broadcaster, which might prove costly if government does not prioritise funding the goal.
The portfolio committee session was attended by senior management of public media institutions and regulators who included the Zimbabwe Media Commission, the Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe, Transmedia, ZBC, New Ziana, and others.
