A 34-YEAR-OLD Chikore High School teacher, Pickson Sithole, was last week sentenced to 18 months imprisonment for abusing a Form Three pupil in front of other pupils.

Sithole had pleaded not guilty when he appeared before Chipinge magistrate Mr Vusumuzi Gapare.

He, however, was convicted due to overwhelming evidence against him.

Three months of Sithole's sentence were suspended for five years on condition that he does not commit a similar offence, while the remaining 15 months were also suspended on condition that he performs 525 hours of community service at Makore Clinic in Masvingo. Prosecuting, Mr Witness

Nyamundaya said some time in July, Sithole was coming from his home at around 5pm when he saw the pupils standing in a corridor.

"Sithole grabbed a Form Three pupil around her waist and smiled. He went away without saying anything," said Mr Nyamundaya.

The 15-year-old girl phoned her aunt who is in South Africa and told her about the incident.

The aunt reported the issue to the girl's father who then made a report to the police leading to Sithole's arrest.
