A taxi driver allegedly struck and injured a vehicle inspector at a road block in Harare as he tried to evade arrest.
Shepherd Jairos, a vehicle inspector at Vehicle Inspection Department was on duty with police officers at a road block when he tried to stop Ernest Dirwai of New Tafara.
It is alleged that instead of stopping, Dirwai ran over Jairos.
Dirwai today appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Donald Ndirowei charged and was not asked to plead to charges of attempted murder.
He was remanded in custody to December 19 and Mr Ndirowei advised him to apply for bail at the High court due to the gravity of the charge.
The lower court has no jurisdiction to entertain bail issues on such matters.
Prosecutor Miss Sharon Mashavira alleges that on November 29, Jairos - who was in uniform - tried to stop Dirwai's taxi.
It is the State's case that Dirwai sped towards Jairos and knocked him down.
Dirwai then drove over Jairos' legs as he lay on the ground.
One of the cops at the roadblock noted Dirwai's registration number as he drove off and a check at Central Vehicle Registry led the arrest of the accused.
In another incident, a commuter omnibus driver on Tuesday allegedly hit a pedestrian and killed him as he also fled the police.
Takesure Musara (20), who was driving a Nissan Caravan towards Mbare, saw two policemen on duty and he reversed to evade them.
In the process he knocked down the pedestrian near the intersection of Chinhoyi and Bank streets.
On Wednesday Musara pleaded guilty to culpable homicide, driving a commuter omnibus under the stipulated age, and driving a public service vehicle without the requisite five years experience.
He has been remanded in custody and will be sentenced on Monday next week.
