Government is committed to the development of the aviation industry as the sector drives international tourism and trade for the growth of economies.
Zimbabwe joined the rest of the world in celebrating the International Civil Aviation Day which was held at the Harare International Airport with representatives of various airlines and tourism stakeholders taking part.
In a speech read on his behalf the Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development, Dr Obert Mpofu, who was represented by his deputy, Petronella Kagonye, said the local aviation industry accounts for over 5 000 jobs and is a key partner in the facilitation of tourism and development.
"Government is funding and supporting various programmes and initiatives in aviation and these include the air transport infrastructure development programme which encompasses major projects such as the upgrading of the Joshua Nkomo airport terminal, expansion of the Victoria Falls airport among other initiatives," said Dr Mpofu.
The world air transport system is estimated to generate US$2.2 trillion annually with about 1 715 airlines operating a fleet of 23 000 aircrafts serving 3 750 airports, transporting 2.6 billion passengers annually.
This year the International Civil Aviation Day was being held under the theme: 'Evolving to Meet the Challenges of the 21st Century.'
