8 260 illegal structures to be be demolished in Chitungwiza and Seke

The audit team on land management and allocations in Chitungwiza and Seke has recommended the relocation of more than 8 000 families to pave the way for the demolition of illegal structures.

The need to relocate 8 260 families was reached following an investigation by the committee which had several meetings with residents and council officials.

Presenting the findings, the audit team chairman, Mr Ronald Chimowa said besides the relocation of families there is need for council to strengthen their systems to avoid such irregularities in the future.

The Deputy Minister of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing, Cde Joel Biggie Matiza said the audit is meant to bring sanity to the allocation of stands in various councils.

Speaking after officially receiving the final report, the Minister of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing, Dr Ignatius Chombo said there is need for all those found on the wrong side of the law to be dealt with decisively without fear or favour.

According to the report, the United We Stand Multi-purpose Housing Co-operative owned by Dr Frederick Mabamba sold 23 074 residential stands for at least US$20 423 900.

The housing co-operative has 90 percent of the illegal structures in Chitungwiza.

Most of the stands have been allocated in connivance with officials from Chitungwiza Town Council, while in Seke, village heads and councillors are also part of the land scam which has seen houses being built on wetlan
