A 32-year-old man is battling for life at the Gweru Provincial Hospital after he was stabbed with a knife and empty beer bottles in a fight over a woman, police have confirmed.

Midlands Police spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko said:

"On 10 December 2013 at about 1am Ernest Marufu was drinking beer at Salaco Nightclub in Mtapa suburb. He had a misunderstanding with the suspect, Donald Dube, over a girlfriend only identified as Yolanda."

Insp Mahoko said a quarrel between Marufu and Dube ensued resulting in a fist-fight.

"Dube later teamed up with four of his friends and dragged Marufu outside the bar. Dube and his accomplices stabbed Marufu with a knife and broken empty beer bottles all over the body.

"They fled the scene and left Marufu for dead," he said.

Insp Mahoko said Dube and his accomplices, whose identities were yet to be established at the time of going to press, were later arrested while at Yolanda's house in Mtapa high density suburb.

In an unrelated incident, a Gokwe man committed suicide by hanging following a quarrel with his wife.

Insp Mahoko said the now deceased, Charles Mangweni, 32, had a dispute with his wife after accusing her of cheating on him.

"Mangweni who was accusing his wife Naume of having an extra marital affair took a log and struck her on the head. He then panicked as he wrongly concluded that he had killed his wife and left the room. He was then found hanging from a tree," he said.

Insp Mahoko said the now deceased's body was found hanging in a bushy area by some passersby in a state of decomposition on Tuesday after his wife  and fellow villagers had failed to locate him for days.
