A Harare man has been hauled before the courts on allegations of stealing eight cars in one month.
Chamunorwa Magwaza, 28, yesterday appeared before magistrate Don Ndirowei facing eight counts of robbery of motor vehicles.
He is jointly charged with several accomplices.
He allegedly committed the offences between September 13 and October 28, this year.
On the first count, Magwaza is jointly charged with Tichaona Munyaradzi Choto, 26, and Nyarai Mutumwa, 23.
On the other counts he is jointly charged with Leeroy Magwaza, 20, Mostaf Mimo, 24, Shingirayi Chasuka, 27, and Mavis Moyo, 21.
Prosecutor Sharon Mashavira told the court that Magwaza stole a Toyota Raum around midnight on September 13. He allegedly approached Gilson Mukonoweshure, who is a taxi driver, and hired him from the city centre to Waterfalls, Harare.
According to state papers, Magwaza was in the company of Choto and Mutumwa. Upon arrival in Waterfalls, Magwaza produced a knife, threatening to stab Mukonoweshure if he did not surrender his vehicle.
The trio allegedly tied-up the taxi driver, before dumping him in a nearby bush.
They drove off and dumped the car at Zvimba-Murombedzi turn-off.
Mashavira said after nine days, Magwaza teamed up with Choto and stole a Honda Fit from Jonathan Musavengana. They allegedly hired him to Glen Norah, Harare, where they threatened him with death before forcing him to surrender his vehicle.
The duo drove off and dumped the car in Chitungwiza.
Magwaza allegedly stole a Toyota Fun Cargo on September 22, while in the company of Choto and Leeroy.
They allegedly undressed the driver, before pushing him out of the vehicle and driving off.
According to state papers, Chasuka later joined Choto and Magwaza on October 12 and allegedly stole a Toyota Raum from Peter Hauchitumi.
The duo of Choto and Magwaza recruited Moyo on their next encounter on October 15, where they stole another Honda Fit from Benevolence Chindunga. The vehicle was recovered in Rusape. During the same night, it is alleged, Choto and Magwaza were joined by Mimo and robbed a Toyota Raum from Chipameso Zafedo.
On October 28, Magwaza, Choto and another person only identified as Tinashe were involved in another escapade, where they stole a Toyota Gaia.
They drove to Kwekwe, where they were involved in an accident, leading to the recovery of the damaged vehicle.
Magistrate Ndirowei remanded all the suspects in custody to December 27.
