Rights groups in Zimbabwe on Thursday said police are persisting with a crackdown on civil society groups ahead of the elections.

The Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition, the country's main umbrella grouping of activists and civil society groups, says five activists have been detained this week in two separate incidents.

The coalition said in a statement that police are using arrest to block community outreach workshops.

In one incident on Tuesday, police detained two Centre for Community Development employees and a female activist at a roadblock as they were on their way to a meeting in central Zimbabwe. Flyers and posters were confiscated.

Two Zimbabwe Human Rights Association (ZimRights) workers were also arrested on Monday as they traveled to an anti-torture workshop.
