There was drama at the Harare Central Hospital on Friday when a 34-year old woman escaped with her four-month old baby who had been admitted accusing the staff of negligence.
Idah Kahwiti of Banket was intercepted by security guards at the Harare Central Children's Hospital after she escaped from the paediatric wards where her child had been admitted for 21 days without receiving any medical attention. The baby was diagnosed with Tuberculosis.
The News caught up with the woman who had packed all her belongings and appeared to have surrendered the fate of her baby to the hospital.
Kahwiti is herself a heart and TB patient.
She narrated how she was referred to the institution to get proper medical attention for her child and had to borrow money for bus-fare from Banket, but had been staying at the hospital since November 22.
Other women whose children are also admitted at the hospital who refused to speak on camera for fear of victimization corroborated Kahwiti's story and added that the doctors appear unwilling to work.
Contacted for a comment, the hospital's Chief Executive Officer, Mrs Peggy Zvevamwe could neither confirm nor deny the allegations, but said the children's hospital is usually manned by student doctors, giving assurance her office will urgently look into the matter.
