VILLAGERS of Lusulu area in Binga are in shock after a 19-year-old man who was employed as a livestock minder raped his employer's one-year-ten-months-old baby.

The accused who cannot be named to protect the identity of the minor pleaded guilty when he appeared before regional magistrate for the Western Division, Mr Sikhumbuzo Nyathi, facing a charge of contravening section 65 as read with Section 64 of the Criminal Law Codification and Reform Act, rape.

It is the State's case that on 28 November at around 8am in Lusulu, the complainant's mother left her one- year-ten-months-old baby sleeping in the bedroom to go and fetch water at a borehole while the accused was herding cattle in the fields near the homestead.

Later at around 10am she returned and found the accused seated with the baby.

She proceeded to the bedroom where she had left the baby sleeping and while making the bed she discovered some blood on the blanket and suspected that her daughter could have scratched herself.

She then decided to examine the child and discovered blood on her private parts and thighs. She informed her husband who in turn asked the accused if he knew anything concerning the discovery upon which he told them that he had sex with the baby.

A report was made leading to his arrest.

He was convicted on his own plea of guilty resulting in the magistrate recommending that he be interviewed by a probation officer who in turn would furnish the courts with a report.

The report will then assist in passing judgment in light of the accused's age.

Mr Sifelumusa Fuzane appeared for the State.
