Six days before the commemoration of Unity Day on 22 December, Zimbabwe's Unity Accord signed in 1987 has been hailed for its lasting legacy, according to the state controlled media.
Veteran nationalist, Dr Sikhanyiso Ndhlovu told ZBC that the reason why Zimbabwean people have stood as one despite enduring attacks from within and outside is solely due to the fact that the nation was born out of a struggle whose ideals were never lost.
Political analyst, Alexander Kanengoni told the state media that the legacy of the 1987 Unity Accord is the moment of recognition by Zimbabweans that being at loggerheads was not the vision which brought them out of the struggle.
The Unity Accord was signed by the late Vice President, Dr Joshua Nkomo as leader of PF- Zapu and Zanu PF leader, President Robert Mugabe on the 22nd of December 1987.
The two parties merged to form Zanu PF.
In line with this year's Unity Day commemorations, a statue is set to be unveiled in honour of the late Father Zimbabwe, Dr Nkomo in Bulawayo while the city's current main street is set to be renamed Joshua Nkomo Street.
On the same day, the Joshua Nkomo International Airport in the country's second largest city will be officially commissioned.
