Depositors ran amok beating up staff and vandalising property at the Allied Bank after they failed to access their cash on Monday.
The incident occurred at the bank's Third Street branch.
According to eye witnesses, depositors who had been waiting patiently to make withdrawals before the institution opened its doors in the morning became irate after spending more than two hours waiting in vain for the cash.
It is alleged that some depositors started exchanging harsh words with the staff which degenerated into a fight with other depositors joining in.
The commotion resulted in security guards throwing teargas to control the situation, worsening it instead and leading the bank to close way before its scheduled time.
Allied Bank is among financial institutions struggling to meet the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe minimum capital thresholds.
