A Harare man lost $47 000 cash to four armed robbers who raided his Mabelreign house last Friday afternoon.
The robbers arrived in a silver Toyota Spacio and told Elijah Mabamba that they wanted to buy five pockets of potatoes. Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector Tadius Chibanda said the robbers were allowed to enter into the yard.
"They produced $100 and they loaded the potatoes into their vehicle. The man then decided to look for change inside the house," he said.
Insp Chibanda said as he was walking in, one of the robbers produced a pistol. They demanded cash and told him that they knew he kept large amounts of cash in his house.
Mabamba was force marched in his bedroom where the robbers took a bag containing $47 000 cash.
"They sprayed his face with an irritant substance and locked him inside the bedroom and drove off," Insp Chibanda said.
Police are investigating the robbery.
Insp Chibanda urged people not to keep large sums in cash as they risked being robbed.
In two recent cash robberies, a 40-year-old illegal gold dealer lost $1 800 and 0,3 grammes of gold to four armed robbers who attacked him at his house in Tore Village in Nyanga under Chief Katerere around midnight.
Meanwhile, another 32-year-old man lost R310 000 and three mobile phones to armed robbers in Masvingo on Saturday.
The man, whose name police withheld, was offered a lift by the robbers when the incident happened. He was coming from Beitbridge and wanted to change rands into United States dollars.
