A Zvishavane bar lady took cover under the counter after an armed robber pounced and made earsplitting screams for help, scaring away the gun-toting robber who intended to rob her of the bar's daily takings.

Ivy Mpofu, 39, a bar lady at Eastval bar in Zvishavane's Murambatsvina suburb, was on duty when an armed robber pounced, demanding cash from her at gun point.

Midlands police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko yesterday confirmed the incident which happened on Sunday.

"When the suspect entered the bar, he ordered a pint of beer from the bar lady, Ivy Mpofu and started drinking while standing at the counter. After some moments, he asked Mpofu to increase the volume of the radio but she declined," he said.

Insp Mahoko said the suspect, who is still on the run, suddenly drew a pistol and demanded cash from Mpofu. He said Mpofu pretended to be reaching for a cash box but went on to take cover under the counter.

She started screaming at the top of her voice scaring away the robber as he bolted out of the bar. The police spokesperson said as the suspect took to his heels, a security guard, who rushed to the scene to investigate, tried to stop him but the suspect threatened to gun him down.

"The suspect melted into the dark and police are appealing to members of the public who might have information that might lead to the arrest of the suspect to approach any nearest police station," he said.
